  1. A precedent: one model changed the world’s discourse

    The Club of Rome’s The Limits to Growth (1972) created worldwide consensus with a single global model, World3. More than 30 million copies of the book were distributed in 30 languages.1

  2. Shared models are the medium of cooperation

    Boundary object theory (Star & Griesemer, 1989) shows that a shared object is a medium that lets groups with different perspectives cooperate even without consensus.2 A concept model is a boundary-object model that integrates the models of many individual perspectives; with one, groups of stakeholders can cooperate even without agreement.

  3. Debate really does bring opinions together

    Deliberative Polling (Fishkin) has demonstrated, in experiments across the United States, China, the EU and elsewhere, that structured debate on balanced, shared information produces real changes of opinion.3 But the more abstract the problem — from personal to planetary — the harder debate becomes.

  4. That is why a tool is needed
